Interest in the expansion of e-commerceas a driver for economic development, especially ecommerceacross borders, has intensified in recent years. While thereis an apparent widespread consensus on the environmentalfactors necessary to promote e-commerce in developingcountries, the basis of empirical evidence on both theextent of e-commerce and the extent to which this isassociated with any of its drivers is disappointingly weak.This paper aims at summarizing the current state of affairswith respect to the availability of data and suggests someways forward in terms of generating an increased supply ofpolicy-relevant data and analysis.
