Lake Toba is a unique natural asset ofglobal significance with a rich cultural heritage located inthe North Sumatra Province of Indonesia. Located 904 metersabove sea level and with a maximum depth of more than 500meters, this 87-kilometer-long lake provides a wide range ofeconomic and environmental goods and services for more thanhalf a million people and 400 villages in the sevendistricts covered by the lake's 3,658 square kilometercatchment. However, sustaining the long-term economic andenvironmental value of Lake Toba depends on addressing thedeterioration of water quality. This technical guidance notereports on the potential benefits of using remote sensing aspart of an integrated strategy to improve the monitoring andmanagement of water quality in Lake Toba.
