Madagascar remains among the poorestcountries in the world, and has shown little improvement inindicators of the well-being of its population over recentyears. The economy faces an array of challenges in reducingpoverty, including an unfavorable investment climate, severeinfrastructure deficits, and political instability. Thisreport synthesizes the insights obtained from a series offive papers on poverty, inequality, labor markets, andreturns to agricultural and nonfarm enterprises inMadagascar over the period 2001-12. These papers draw on acombination of empirical techniques, household livingstandards data, and firm-level data to elucidate keydynamics and structural issues driving poverty and welfare(in all cases measured as per capita consumption) over thisdozen-year period.
