【 摘 要 】

This report will assist decision makersand other stakeholders in Ulaanbaatar in deciding how toimprove sanitation in the Ger areas, which are fast-growing,largely unplanned peri-urban settlements around the city. Itis part of a larger study on improving sanitation in coldregions where sewerage may not be a practical solution. Thereport grew out of a pilot project meant to improvesanitation in the Ger areas by connecting households to themunicipal water supply system and to a small, independentsewerage system. For a number of reasons, operating thesystem was very challenging. Thus, the question arose ofwhat practicable, affordable technical options exist forimproving sanitation in the Ger areas of Ulaanbaatar andother cold regions. The study is aimed at answering that question.
