Melaka State, situated roughly halfwaybetween Kuala Lumpur and Singapore, has unique importance inthe global dialogue around the sustainability of our sharedurban future. At Melaka’s heart is its historic urbancenter, a UNESCO World Heritage Site (WHS) strategicallylocated along the Strait of Malacca, one of the world’sbusiest shipping routes and a link between the two largestcountries by population, China and India. Melaka has takensignificant steps toward realizing a more sustainable urbangrowth trajectory, including becoming a member of globalplatform for sustainable cities (GPSC) when the platform waslaunched in 2016. In 2017, GPSC initiated the sustainabilityoutlook diagnostic with the United Nations IndustrialDevelopment Organization (UNIDO) and the Malaysianindustry-government group for high technology (MIGHT) toassist Melaka State in achieving the level of urbansustainability to which it aspires. This detailed assessmentcovers six dimensions of sustainability. Each reportprovides significant insight into different aspects ofMelaka’s sustainability trajectory and highlights key areasfor improvement.
