Melaka is a rapidly growing twenty-firstcentury city in transition, increasing its population byforty percent in the last fifteen years in Malaysia. Rapidgrowth in population has fueled demand for new urbandevelopment, improved infrastructure and better services andfacilities. Melaka has the vision to become a green cityfocused on addressing the important climate change and greengrowth agenda. Shaping efficiently its future urbanizationis an essential enabling dimension of this vision forMelaka. Evidence linking efficient spatial planning andhigher economic density with agglomeration economies, higherproductivity and overall economic growth is wellestablished. To achieve its economic goal of becoming aservice economy, Melaka must create proximity and facilitatethe flow of knowledge that fosters innovation. The spatialshape of Melaka must make it a center of productivity, humancapital and greater access to markets. Adopting anintegrated approach to land use and urban planning betweengeographical scales and economic sectors is critical to theorderly development of a sustainable city.
