Mandalay is the second-largest city inMyanmar and a gateway to the Bay of Bengal to neighboringeconomic hubs. Rapid economic and demographic growth, pairedwith the relaxation of import restrictions for new and usedtwo, three, and four-wheeler has resulted in rapidlydeclining conditions for urban transport. Motorization andvehicle intensity use, congestion, emissions, andtraffic-related injuries are hampering well-being andcompetitiveness. Unless action is taken, Mandalay willconsolidate as a motorcycle-only city, posing challenges forthe excluded and vulnerable. The report calls for urgentactions to seize the window of opportunity brought by agrowing economy and put forward actionable, simple, andaffordable strategies aiming to provide efficient,equitable, clean, and safe mobility for Myanmar’ largesturban agglomerations. This overview note presents highlightsof the report for Mandalay. It can support policydiscussions on improving urban transport with proportionalfunding and financing and financing options suited to a boldvision for Mandalay.
