This engagement note provides educationsector policymakers with an overview of the status ofeducation across the six Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC)countries and offers insight into the World Bank’sstrategies and approaches to supporting education reform inthe GCC region. While the Gulf countries are similar in manyways, each country has its own contextual factors andsocioeconomic dynamic that may affect the process ofeducation reform. The insights offered build on thesimilarities and national human development ambitions ofeach country to offer broad approaches to education reform.Keeping this in mind, country engagements will requirefurther refinements and tailoring to the needs of each GCCcountry. The note includes an overview of the socioeconomiccontext and challenges, along with a section on policyinterventions within the education sector. It concludes witha discussion of priority areas for the sector, as well aspotential strategies for World Bank support to educationreform in the GCC.
