Under nutrition levels in Lao PDR remainamong the highest in the world, despite both rapid economicgrowth and a significant decline in poverty over the pastyears. Concerns about the slow progress in reducing undernutrition have triggered intense policy discussion andseveral analytical reports have been produced over the lastfew years on the Lao PDR nutrition crisis and its drivers.This policy note provides an overview of the size, severity,and key determinants of child under nutrition in Lao PDR andproposes recommendations for the scale-up of programs andinterventions to strengthen the overall response to undernutrition in the country. The note draws from a multivariateanalysis of determinants of stunting in addition todescriptive statistics of nutrition-related behaviors andoutcomes in the country, using recent surveys. Theseanalyses are complemented with findings from the recentqualitative-based rapid assessment of nutrition counselingand growth monitoring conducted during the early months of2016 in selected provinces, to contextualize findings withinthe health sector’s capacity to deliver preventive andcurative nutrition services.
