A recent overview of World Bank socialsafety net programs and gender highlighted the need forgreater consideration of intra-household dynamics in thedesign of social protection programs (Bardasi 2014). Duringprogram design, decisions have to be made about who totarget, how much and how often to give cash transfers, andwhat measures should accompany cash transfers. Thesedecisions become even more complex in the context ofpolygamous households. The conclusions above are meant toillustrate important links between intra-household dynamicsand the design of cash transfer programs. As a preliminarystudy, this research did not capture the actual effects ofcash transfers. It is important to remember that moneyreceived from the government in the form of a regular cashtransfer may be treated differently than income from othersources. Additional research is planned that will measuredifferences in the use of cash transfers depending on thesocial protection program design.
