【 摘 要 】
Several studies explore the differencesin men’s and women’s labor market participation rates andwages. Some of these differences have been linked to genderdisparities in education attainment and access. The presentpaper contributes to this literature by analyzing therelationship between the proclivity of a firm to have afemale top manager and access to education among womenrelative to men in the country. The paper combines theliterature on women’s careers in management, which hasmostly focused on developed countries, with the developmentliterature that has emphasized the importance of access toeducation. Using firm-level data for 73 developingcountries, the analysis finds strong evidence that countrieswith a higher proportion of female top managers also havehigher enrollment rates for women relative to men inprimary, secondary, and tertiary education.
