【 摘 要 】
Cultural distance in this Brief refersto the gap between development narratives promoted from thedeveloped world—from experts, policymakers, andinternational organizations—versus political-economypractices in the developing world. The cultural distanceanalyzed here focuses on paternalistic factors in advancedcountries contributing to trade barriers facing developingcountries. Gradual moves toward reciprocal rather thandiscriminatory preferential access, as well as exportdiversification, can benefit the developing world.
