In many low, and middle-income countries(LMICs), rapid urbanization, population growth, and changinglifestyles are driving a growing burden fueled bynoncommunicable disease and injury, while poor sanitationand overcrowding create conditions for infectious pathogensto spread and thrive. This changing burden of disease isincreasing pressure on the health work force, with manyconditions going undiagnosed and thus untreated. Coping withthese new threats will require transitioning toward modelsof primary care that support an expanded focus on healthpromotion, disease prevention, and integratedmultidisciplinary care to ensure equitable health gains forall, including the urban poor.
