Adolescence and youth are periods ofopportunities but also of increasing vulnerability definedby social and political factors. Early marriages and riskybehaviors are strongly associated with inequalities ofincome, education, gender, and ethnicity, all of which canincrease young people's susceptibility to poor healthand well-being throughout their lifecycle. Adolescent healthis more important than ever, given that the world containsthe largest cohort in history of young people aged between10 and 24 years old. The challenges affecting the livelihoodof young people are reflected in their burden of disease(BoD). A better understanding of the BoD for this generationof adolescents and youths can help to reveal what measureshealth systems should be taking to curb behavior related tohealth risks, for example, eating patterns, physicalactivity and weight, sexual behavior, the use ofpsychoactive substances, and transport-related injuries.
