One of the most challenging experiencesfor businesses involved in cross bordertrade along Kenya’sborder points is the clearance of imports and exports. Until2015, the process of clearing cargo was largely manual. Morethan 29 different government agencies with different rolesin the clearance of international trade goods requiredbusinesses to apply for and submit different sets of cargoclearance documents. The World Bank Group’s trade andcompetitiveness team, through the Kenya investment climateprogram, has supported the government of Kenya inimplementing the Kenya National Electronic Single WindowSystem, also known as the Kenya TradeNet System. This smartlesson describes the system, how it works, itsaccomplishments, and lessons learned along the way.
