This note provides guidance on theconduct of environmental and social impact assessments(ESIAs) and the implementation of associated environmentaland social management plans (ESMPs). Crop and livestockproduction, forestry, fisheries, and aquaculture all dependon the use of land, water, and other natural resources thatare inextricably linked to rural livelihoods, socialsystems, values, and culture. ESIAs and ESMPs are key toolsfor identifying and assessing social and environmental risksand benefits at the planning stage of an investment, and forbuilding risk mitigation measures into project design andimplementation. Although usually legislative requirements, too often they have been treated as box-ticking exercises. There remainssignificant room for improvement in the conductof assessment and the rigor with which findings areincorporated into management plans.
