New England is the birthplace of the U.S. wind power industry and home to a number of wind industry firsts, including the first large-scale electricity-producing windmill and the world's first wind farm. Today, wind power is the fastest-growing energy source in the country and the world. In New England, wind energy is poised to help diversify the region's electricity supply mix, reducing the energy dependence of a region that is traditionally a major energy importer. A new wave of development activity, including traditional wind farms, community-scale development, and efforts to tap the world-class winds off our shores, is underway throughout the region.
