【 摘 要 】

The gathering of experimental theatre companies in Chelsea after 1914 gave the area a new lease of life as a centre for modern art, just when the London avant-garde is meant to have broken up because of the war. This section will present the main groups involved as listed below. It will use the surviving evidence of pictures, photographs and documents to recreate a sense of the performances that they staged, their camaraderie, and the radical ideas that underpinned their productions, and that drove them to keep experimenting throughout the war. The idea of the unity of the arts was particularly important to their work, and will be explored through the intermingling of works of visual art and theatrical material.
