【 摘 要 】

Although the etymology of the pair νόος-νοεῖν remains rather obscure, it is still possible to establish on a semantical level an orignal signification not only linked to the direct experience but more precisely to the νόος as an organ-function of the elaboration of « action patterns ». The activity of the νόος would then be to create images which are a not only a representation of reality but have above all a pragmatic-conative value. They are able both to anticipate, without being the result of an elaborate reflexion, the shape of the action the subject has to accomplish according to the situation and to push the subject to accomplish it. The article intends to develop this hypothesis, putting back the νόος into the oral homeric culture and its specificities using : 1) the two prevailing etymological hypothesis which share the idea of a close link between the activity of the νόος and the field of vision : the hypothesis *snu from the indoeuropean root meaning « to sniff at » something or a situation (von Fritz, Heidegger, Gadamer et al.) and the hypothesis *nes, a root which indicates « the return to light » or « the avoidance of death » (Frame et al.); 2) positions on the νόος developped by Kerenyi, Snell and Lesher who ground their critical reflexion in the homeric writing, considered the main source to define the meaning of νόος-νοεῖν ; 3) the field of cognitive sciences and particularly the notion of « action oriented representation » developped by Andy Clark and the hypothesis elaborated by Stefanelli and based on Damasio’s work of the νόος as a « movement of the awareness returning to itself ». This confrontation will allow the author to confirm his initial hypothesis of the νόος being an « action pattern » and to precise its quality both of productive activity and construction of reality.
