【 摘 要 】
Pindar’s third Pythian ode is teeming with words denoting states of consciousness (νόος, φρήν, γνώμα, ψυχά, θυμός and καρδία). The mythological section of the ode, in particular, offers a detailed account of Apollo’s single-handed realisation, from afar, that his beloved Coronis (who is pregnant by him) is unfaithful. Obviously, the νόος plays a leading part in the process, but defining it more specifically requires a close examination of the lines 24-32. Further down (lines 80-82), Pindar, in urging his addressee (the tyrant Hiero) to make use of his reflective powers, draws a type of human knowledge that is neither absolute, nor blind, nor corrupted. Contemporary Pythian 9 provides a humorous counterpoint with its focus on a very particular kind of cognitive disorder, the confusion and disruption of divine omniscience under the spell of love.
