SilurianSpanilaBarrande,1881(NepiomorphiaKřÞ,2007)ofPerunicaandtheEuropeanperi-Gondwanacontainstwospecies,Spanilagracilis(MünsterinGoldfuss,1837)andSpaniladiscipulusBarrande,1881.Itrepresentsanimportanttaxon-range-zoneinthemiddleLudfordiantotheearliestPÅ™ÃdolÃcephalopodlimestonefaciesandmaybecorrelatedwiththeintervalfromtheNeocucullograptuskozlowskiiBiozonetotheearlyMonograptusparultimusBiozone.Semi-infaunalTetinkaBarrande,1881fromtheGorstianofPerunicawasmostprobablytheancestorofSpanila,adaptedtothespecificsemi-infaunalorinfaunalmodeoflife.Theassumptionofsemi-infaunalmodeoflifeissupportedbythecyrtiidbrachiopodepibiontsattachedbytheirtriangularventralinterareatotheposteriorpartoftheshell,presumablyabovethelevelofthesediment.Spanilaoccupiednarrowspacesbetweenthecrowdedcurrent-orientedcylindricalcephalopodshellsandiscommonlypreservedwithconjoinedvalves,ofteninthelivingposition,i.e.withthefrontalfacedownandparallelwithbeddingplane.
