SixfructificationsofarborescentlycopsidsandtheirinsitusporesfromtheWestphalianCoalMeasuresofthePennineBasinandtheClackmannanCoalfieldinScotland,UK,werestudiedtoimproveourknowledgeoftheirtaxonomiccharacteristicsandtoprovideabasisforthecomparisonoftheflorasoftheBritishandCzechcoalfields.Thecones,whichyieldedinsituspores,wereassignedtothegeneraLepidostrobus(Brongniart)Brack-HanesThomas,Flemingites(Carruthers)Brack-HanesThomasandSigillariostrobusSchimper.Lepidostrobusconesarerepresentedbyfourspecies/specimensthatcanbesubdividedintotwogroupsbasedontheirinsituspores.L.boltonensisn.sp.,L.huttoniin.sp.andL.spinosusKidstoncontaincingulizonatelycosporeswithrelativelynarrowcingulumandnarrowzonawhicharecomparablewiththedispersedspeciesLycosporasubjugaBharadwaj,L.brevijugaKosanke,L.triangulataBharadwaj,L.microgranulataBharadwajorL.contactaHabib.TheconeL.cf.obovatusyieldedinsitulycosporeswithnarrowcingulumandwidezonasimilartothoseofthedispersedspeciesLycosporaloganii(Wilson)PotoniéKremp,L.pellucida(Wicher)Schopf,WilsonBentall,L.micropapillata(WilsonCoe)Schopf,WilsonBentall,L.microgranaHacquebardBarss,L.intermedia(WilsonHoffmeister)WilsonHoffmeister,L.pseudoannulataKosankeandL.perforataBharadwajVenkatachala.ThegenusFlemingitesisrepresentedbyF.cf.russelianusBinney.TheFlemingitesconeyieldsinsitumicrosporesidentifiedastheLycosporaorbicula-type.SigillarianconesarerareandwererepresentedbyasinglespecimenofSigillariostrobusacicularisn.sp.whichcontainedCrassisporakosankei-typemicrospores.OnlyoneoftheseBritishspecies(Lepidodendroncf.obovatus)isunequivocallypresentinthecoalfieldsofcentralandwesternBohemia.ItisprobablethatFlemingitescf.russelianusalsooccursinbothareas.
