RecentfieldworkinLaoPDRandtheMalaysianstateofSabahproducedmultiplecollectionsofalarge-floweredIpomoeathatappearedtobethesamespecies.Thedisjunctdistribution,however,seemedanomalous.CheckingtypeimagesandotherspecimensledtothenameI.cambodiensisGagnep.amp;Courchet,describedfromCambodia.Afulldescription,distributionmap,discussionofthetaxonomy,ecology,andperceivedrelationships,plusacompilationofallspecimensseentodateareprovidedforthisenigmaticandheretoforelittleknownspecies.
