TheacanthodianoriginallydescribedasEuthacanthuscurtusPowrie,1870fromtheEarlyDevonian(Lochkovian)ofScotlandwastentativelyreassignedtoDiplacanthusAgassiz,1844laterinthenineteenthcentury,althoughdoubtwascastonthisrevision.In1976PatonsuggestedthatspecimenscomparablewiththesingletypecouldbelongtoUraniacanthusMiles,1973,basedonsimilaritieswiththetypespeciesU.spinosusMiles,1973fromtheLochkovianofEngland.Hankeetal.(2001)notedthattheCanadianLochkovianspeciesGladiobranchusprobatonBernacsekamp;Dineley,1977wasalsoverysimilartoU.spinosus.OurinvestigationsindicatethatallthreespeciesbelongtothegenusUraniacanthus(whichhaspriorityoverGladiobranchusBernacsekamp;Dineley,1977)inthefamilyGladiobranchidaeBernacsekamp;Dineley,1977,orderDiplacanthiformesBerg,1940(revised).ThisidentificationsupportsabiogeographicalconnectionbetweentheCanadian,ScottishandEnglishEarlyDevonianbasedonthecommonpresenceofthegenusUraniacanthus,aswellasotheracanthodiangenera,includingIschnacanthusPowrie,1864.UraniacanthuscouldalsoberepresentedbyisolatedscalesincoevaldepositsintheBaltic.
