【 摘 要 】
Bonemorphogeneticproteins(BMPs)caneitherpromotegrowthofembryonicmusclebyexpandingthePax-3-expressingmuscleprecursorpopulationorrestrictitsdevelopmentbyinducingapoptosis.Follistatin,aproposedBMPantagonist,isexpressedinembryonicmuscle.DeficiencyinFollistatinresultsinmuscledefectsandpostnatalasphyxia.Here,wereportthatduringchicklimbdevelopmentFollistatinenhancesBMP-7actiontoinducemusclegrowthbutpreventstheabilityofBMP-7toinduceapoptosisandmuscleloss.Follistatin,unlikeanotherBMP-bindingprotein,Noggin,promotesPax-3expressionandtransientlydelaysmuscledifferentiationandthusexertsproliferativesignallingduringmuscledevelopment.WeprovidedatawhichshowthatFollistatinbindsBMP-7andBMP-2atlowaffinitiesandthatthebindingisreversible.ThesedatasuggestthatFollistatinactstopresentBMPstomyogeniccellsataconcentrationthatpermitsstimulationofembryonicmusclegrowth.
