ThecuticleoftheadultabdomenofDrosophilaisproducedbynestsofimaginalhistoblasts,whichproliferateandmigrateduringmetamorphosistoreplacethepolyploidlarvalepidermalcells.Inthisreport,wepresentadetaileddescriptionoftheexpressionoffourkeypatterninggenes,engrailed(en),hedgehog(hh),patched(ptc),andoptomotor-blind(omb),inabdominalhistoblastsduringthefirst42hafterpupariation,aperiodinwhichtheadultpatternisestablished.Inaddition,wedescribetheexpressionofthehomeoticgenesUltrabithorax,abdominal-A,andAbdominal-B,whichspecifythefatesofadultabdominalsegments.Ourresultsindicatethatabdominalsegmentsdevelopinisolationfromoneanotherduringearlypupalstages,andthatsomepatterningeventsareindependentofhh,wingless,anddecapentaplegicsignaling.WeshowthatpatternandpolarityinalargeanteriorportionofthesegmentarespecifiedwithoutinputfromHh,andpresentevidencethatabdominaltergitespossessanunderlyingsymmetricpatternuponwhichpatterningbyHhissuperimposed.Thesignalsresponsibleforthisunderlyingsymmetryremaintobeidentified.
