【 摘 要 】

Introduction: Thalassaemia is a group of genetic disorders of blood, characterized by decreased synthesis of one of two types of poly peptide chain (? or ß) that form a normal adult human haemoglobin molecule (Hb A- ?2 ß2). This results in decreased filling of red cell with haemoglobin and anaemia. Retardation of growth and delayed sexual maturation can occur as a complication of thalassaemia. The objectives of this study were to study the pattern of growth failure and sexual maturity rate (SMR) in children with ?-thalassaemia major, and to compare it with controls.
