Allanimalsheal,andtheabilitytohealisrequisiteforhumanhealth.Oneaspectofrepairthathasalwaysbeenconsideredtobeessentialforadequatehealingisthecreationofanewvasculatureviaangiogenesis.Asadultskinwoundsheal,aperiodofrapidandrobustcapillarygrowthcreatesavascularbedthathasmanyfoldmorecapillariesthandoesnormaltissue.Overtime,mostofthenewlyformedcapillariesregress,resultinginafinalvasculardensitysimilartothatofnormalskin.Certainly,newcapillariesarenecessarytobringnutrients,immunecells,andoxygentohealingwounds.Yet,thepresumedfunctionalimportanceofanoverabundanceofcapillarieshasrecentlybeenchallenged,creatingquestionsaboutwhetherexcesscapillarygrowthistrulynecessaryforhealing.Inparticular,studiesofwoundsthathealexceptionallyquicklyandwithlessscarformation,suchasthoseinfetalskinandoralmucosa,showthatthesetissueshealwithareducedangiogenicburstcomposedofmorematurevesselsthatprovidebetteroxygenation.Thelevelofangiogenesisinwoundsoftencorrelateswiththeinflammatoryresponse,largelybecauseinflammatorycellsproduceanabundanceofproangiogenicmediators.Boththeselectivereductionofinflammationandtheselectivereductionofangiogenesishavenowbeensuggestedaswaystoimprovescarring.Theseconceptslinkexcessiveinflammationandtheproductionofadensebutpoorlyperfusedcapillarybedtoinferiorhealingoutcomes...
