Emergingdatasuggestnewfacetsoftheconcertedparticipationofneutrophilsandmacrophagesinantimicrobialimmunity.TheclassicalviewisthatDCsandmacrophagesaretheinducersofadaptiveantimicrobialimmunity,butthereisevidenceforneutrophilparticipationinthistaskascytokineandchemokineproducersandAPCs.Ontheotherhand,theconceptthattheTH1responseisonlyassociatedwithcontrolofinfectionsbyintracellularpathogensthroughactivationofmacrophagesbyIFN‐γ,andtheTH17/IL‐17axisisonlyinvolvedinprotectionagainstextracellularpathogensthroughmobilizationandactivationofneutrophilsissimplistic:ThereisevidencesuggestingthatTH1andTH17responses,separatelyorinparallel,mayusemacrophagesandneutrophilsagainstinfectionsbyextracellularandintracellularmicrobialpathogens.Opsonizationbypathogen‐specificIgsenhancestheantimicrobialcapabilitiesofneutrophilsandmacrophagesininfectionsbyextracellularandintracellularmicrobes.Thefunctionalpartnershipbetweenmacrophagesandneutrophilsasinducersandeffectorsofadaptiveantimicrobialimmunityconformstotheiraffiliationwiththemyeloidphagocytesystemandrevealsastrategybasedontheconcurrentuseofthetwoprofessionalphagocytesintheadaptivedefensemechanisms.Startingfromacommonmyeloidprecursorinthebonemarrow,macrophagesandneutrophilssplitduringdifferentiationbutcometogetherattheinfectiousfociforacooperativestrategythatusesmodulatorandeffectoractivitiestoattackinvadingmicrobialpathogens...
