Compartmentalizationincellsoftheimmunesystem,thefocusofthisreview,facilitatesthespatiotemporalorganizationofcellularresponsesessentialforspecializedimmunefunctions.Inthisprocessofcompartmentmaintenance,Rabproteinsarecentralregulatorsofprotein‐mediatedtransportandfusionofintracellularstructures.Itiswidelybelievedthattheintracellularconcentrationofproteinsthatregulateintracellulartransport,includingRabproteins,isconstitutivelymantained.However,thereisagrowingbodyofevidenceindicatingthattranscriptionalratesofRabproteinscanbemodified.Thisprocessisespeciallyevidentduringimmuneactivationandarguesthatafteractivation,thesecellsrequirehigherlevelsofRabproteins.TheaimofthisreviewistodiscussevidenceshowingtheincreasinglinksbetweenRabproteinexpressionandintracellulartransport,particularlyinmonocytesandmacrophages.WehighlightherebiologicalprocessesinwhichtheexpressionofRabGTPasesisselectivelyregulated,leadingtotheactivationofspecificintracellularroutes.Further,wefocusontheimmuneregulationofintracellulartransportaftercytokineactivationandmicrobialinfection,withanemphasisinmycobacterialinfection...
