AMsconstituteanimportantbridgebetweeninnateandadaptiveimmunity.AMspatrolthelungsagainstpathogens,removesenescentcells,andhelprepairtissue.AMfunctionisalteredinmanydiseases,includingDM,whereAMabnormalimmuneresponsesmayworseninfectionsorleadtoexacerbationofinflammatoryreactions.InvivoexperimentalmodelshavegreatlycontributedtoourknowledgeofAMfunction.Studieshaveshownthatduringhyperglycemicstates,thephagocyticfunctionofAMsandtheexpressionofadhesionmoleculesmaybealtered,interferingwiththerecruitmentofimmunecellstotheinflammatorysite.InsulintreatmentseemstorecoverthenormalfunctionofimpairedAMs.However,muchresearchisstillneededtocharacterizeAMsandtobetterunderstandtheirroleininflammationandinfection,particularlyindiabeticpatients.Inthisreview,weattempttoexplorerecentlyaccumulatedknowledgeaboutAMfunctionandhowthisfunctionisdeficientinDM.Additionally,AMpolarizationiscomparedbrieflywiththatofTcells,andthismayinterferewithhowimmuneresponseisdriven.ThisreviewdiscusseshowimpairedAMsleadtoanaberrantimmuneresponsethatcontributestoworseninginfectionandautoimmunity,openingupdiscussionforfutureworkinthefield...
