Removalofunwanted,effete,ordamagedcellsthroughapoptosis,anactivecelldeathculminatinginphagocyticremovalofcellcorpses,isanimportantprocessthroughouttheimmunesystemindevelopment,control,andhomeostasis.Forexample,neutrophilapoptosisiscentraltotheresolutionofacuteinflammation,whereasautoreactiveandvirus‐infectedcellsaresimilarlydeleted.TheACremovalprocessfunctionsnotonlytoremovecellcorpsesbutfurther,tocontrolinappropriateimmuneresponsessothatACsareremovedinananti‐inflammatorymanner.Such″silent″clearanceismediatedbytheinnateimmunesystemviapolarizedmonocyte/macrophagepopulationsthatusearangeofPRRsandsolublemoleculestopromotebindingandphagocytosisofACs.Additionally,attractivesignalsarereleasedfromdyingcellstorecruitphagocytestositesofdeath.Here,wereviewthemolecularmechanismsassociatedwithinnateimmuneremovalofandresponsestoACsandoutlinehowthesemayimpactontissuehomeostasisandage‐associatedpathology(e.g.,cardiovasculardisease).Furthermore,wediscusshowanaginginnateimmunesystemmaycontributetotheinflammatoryconsequencesofagingandwhythestudyofanagingimmunesystemmaybeausefulpathtoadvancecharacterizationofmechanismsmediatingeffectiveACclearance...
