Systemicinflammationthatoccurswithincreasingage(inflammaging)isthoughttocontributetotheincreasedsusceptibilityoftheelderlytoseveraldiseasestates.Theelderlyareatsignificantriskfordevelopingpulmonarydisordersandinfectiousdiseases,butthecontributionofinflammationinthepulmonaryenvironmenthasreceivedlittleattention.Inthisstudy,wedemonstratethatthelungsofoldmicehaveelevatedlevelsofproinflammatorycytokinesandaresidentpopulationofhighlyactivatedpulmonarymacrophagesthatarerefractorytofurtheractivationbyIFN‐γ.TheimpactofthisinflammatorystateonmacrophagefunctionwasdeterminedinvitroinresponsetoinfectionwithM.tb.MacrophagesfromthelungsofoldmicesecretedmoreproinflammatorycytokinesinresponsetoM.tbinfectionthansimilarcellsfromyoungmiceandalsodemonstratedenhancedM.tbuptakeandP‐Lfusion.SupplementationofmousechowwiththeNSAIDibuprofenledtoareversaloflungandmacrophageinflammatorysignatures.Thesedataindicatethatthepulmonaryenvironmentbecomesinflammatorywithincreasingageandthatthisinflammatoryenvironmentcanbereversedwithibuprofen...
