HIV‐infectedindividualsareatincreasedriskofcoronaryarterydisease(CAD)withunderlyingmechanismsincludingchronicimmuneactivationandinflammationsecondarytoHIV‐inducedmicrobialtranslocationandlow‐gradeendotoxemia;directeffectsofHIVandviralproteinsonmacrophagecholesterolmetabolism;anddyslipidemiarelatedtoHIVinfectionandspecificantiretroviraltherapies.Monocytesaretheprecursorsofthelipid‐ladenfoamcellswithintheatheroscleroticplaqueandproducehighlevelsofproinflammatorycytokinessuchasIL‐6.TheminorCD14+/CD16+“proinflammatory”monocytesubpopulationispreferentiallysusceptibletoHIVinfectionandmayplayacriticalroleinthepathogenesisofHIV‐relatedCAD.Inthisreview,thecentralroleofmonocytes/macrophagesinHIV‐relatedCADandtheimportanceofinflammationandcholesterolmetabolismarediscussed...
