All-green textile sizes with satisfactory weaving performance and biodegradability were developed from soy protein and glycerol, two major byproducts from soy-based biodiesel production. Polyvinyl alcohol has long dominated textile sizing chemical market due to its excellent sizing performance, despite its non-biodegradability. Efforts have been devoted to replace polyvinyl alcohol for a more sustainable textile industry. Recently, substitute size developed from soy protein after using high amount of petro-based triethanolamine showed acceptable sizing properties. However, triethanolamine was not an ecofriendly additive, due to its petroleum origin and non-biodegradability. In this research, glycerol was used to plasticize soy protein to develop all-green soy size. Glycerol interrupted hydrogen bonds in the soy globulin, allowing them to extend in the films. Resultantly, the soy size films possessed high stretchability and work of rupture. Lab-scale experiments and industrial weaving proved that the all green soy size had similar or better weaving performance and remarkably better degradability, comparing to polyvinyl alcohol and triethanolamine plasticized soy protein size. For the first time, a possible logarithmic relationship was found between work of rupture of the size film and relative weaving efficiency. (C) 2016 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

    To determine whether repetitive exposure to low-dose radiation (LDR) attenuates type 2 diabetes (T2DM)-induced testicular apoptotic cell death in a T2DM rat model, we examined the effects of LDR exposure on diabetic and age-matched control rats. We found that testicular apoptosis and oxidative stress levels were significantly higher in T2DM rats than in control rats. In addition, glucose metabolism related Akt and GSK-3 beta function was downregulated and Akt negative regulators PTP1B and TRB3 were upregulated in the T2DM group. Superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity and catalase content were also found to be decreased in T2DM rats. These effects were partially prevented or reversed by repetitive LDR exposure. Nrf2 and its downstream genes NQ01, SOD, and catalase were significantly upregulated by repetitive exposure to LDR, suggesting that the reduction of T2DM-induced testicular apoptosis due to repetitive LDR exposure likely involves enhancement of testicular Akt-mediated glucose metabolism and anti-oxidative defense mechanisms.       Decades of successful active fire mapping from space, have led to global informational products of growing importance to scientific community and operational agencies. In contrast, detecting fires from space faster than current conventional capabilities in the continental U.S. has not been considered attainable, except in remote, sparsely populated areas. We present a research prototype version of the GOES Early Fire Detection (GOES-EFD) algorithm focused on minimizing the time to first detection of a wildfire incident. The algorithm is designed for regional-scale surveillance and combines multitemporal anomaly tests developed in our previous work, contextual hot-spot tests, and dynamic event classification and tracking. The GOES-EFD version 0.4 was initially tested with 40-day summer 2006 data over central California. The algorithm identified most of large (final size> 2 ha) wildfires within 30 min and 31% of the wildfires were detected before they were reported by the public. Under identical operation conditions, GOES-EFD 0.4 provided quicker initial detection than the temporally filtered operational WF-ABBA algorithm (version 6.1) and committed fewer false alarms. There is a substantial potential for further reducing detection latency and increasing reliability. Following the ongoing optimizations, tests, and integration in collaboration with the fire management agencies and first responders, GOES-EFD could be deployed for regional scale real-time surveillance to complement existing fire identification methods.         Magnetic domains of a die-upset Nd-Fe-B magnet with an energy product of about 50 MGOe are investigated by using in-situ magnetic force microscopy (MFM), varying temperature from room temperature to 240 degrees C. For both as-prepared and magnetized Nd-Fe-B samples, the domain-pattern evolution during thermal demagnetization is monitored by MFM. The temperature dependence of the evolution of reverse domains is explained by micromagnetic models.           Tricyclic, bicyclic, and monocyclic compounds containing cyanoenones induce various anti-inflammatory and cytoprotective enzymes through activation of the Keap1/Nrf2/ARE (antioxidant response element) pathway. The potency of these compounds as Nrf2 activators was determined using a prototypic cytoprotective enzyme NAD(P)H:quinone oxidoreductase 1 (NQO1) in Hepa1c1c7 murine hepatoma cells. The electron affinity (EA) of the compounds, expressed as the energy of their lowest unoccupied molecular orbital [E (LUMO)], was evaluated using two types of quantum mechanical calculations: the semiempirical (AM1) and the density functional theory (DFT) methods. We observed striking linear correlations [r = 0.897 (AM1) and 0.936 (DFT)1 between NQO1 inducer potency of these compounds and their E (LUMO) regardless of the molecule size. Importantly and interestingly, this finding demonstrates that the EA is the essentially important factor that determines the reactivity of the cyanoenones with Keap1. (C) 2016 Elsevier Ltd.             Pulsed laser deposition (PLD) technique is suitable for the deposition of high-quality compound semiconductor thin films, and has been widely developed in recent years. However, pulsed laser deposition of CdS films has rarely been reported. In this work, we prepared CdS thin films using PLD. The effects of growth temperature on the PLD-CdS thin films were studied towards high-performance CdS/CdTe thin film solar cells. Results showed that the CdS film prepared at 400 degrees C has the best crystallinity and optical transmittance, while 200 degrees C is more suitable for the window layer of CdTe solar cells due to the highest energy conversion efficiency and the best short-wavelength response. CdCl2 annealing treatment was also employed on the 200 degrees C-deposited and 400 degrees C-deposited PLD-CdS layer. Annealing treatment further enhanced crystallinity, and obviously enlarged the grain size. Optical transmittance spectra showed that the band gap of the CdS films increased after annealing. Fermi level of CdS films shifted closer to the conduction band from XPS analysis. CdTe solar cells with annealed windows obtained further improved performance, including higher short-circuit current, open-circuit voltage and energy conversion efficiency. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V.
