【 摘 要 】

Three conducting lecture-recitals constitute this dissertation project. The first consisted of various performances by the University of Michigan Symphony Band and Concert Band. The Symphony Band Chamber Winds performed Dixtuor, op. 14 by George Enescu on October 22, 2013 at the First United Methodist Church of Ann Arbor. ;;Selections from The Danserye” by Tielman Susato (arranged by Patrick Dunnigan) was performed on November 25, 2013 by the Concert Band in Hill Auditorium. The Symphony Band Chamber Winds performed Concerto for Nine Instruments, op. 24 by Anton Webern and The Maple Leaf Rag and The Entertainer by Scott Joplin (arranged by Gunther Schuller) on February 21, 2014 in Stamps Auditorium. On March 14, 2014, the Symphony Band performed Rapture by Patrick Harlin in Hill Auditorium. A corresponding public lecture, ;;Overtones of Identity,” was presented on September 11, 2014.The second recital consisted of performances by the Symphony Band, Concert Band, and ad hoc student ensembles. Variations on Mein junges Leben hat ein End by Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck (arranged by Ramon Ricker) was performed on September 26, 2014 by the Symphony Band in Hill Auditorium. The Concert Band performed Consort for Ten Winds by Robert Spittal on October 6, 2014 in Hill Auditorium. On October 24, 2014 the Symphony Band performed Hammersmith, Prelude and Scherzo, op. 52 by Gustav Holst in Hill Auditorium. Selections from Così fan tutte by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (arranged by Johann Nepomuk Wendt) and Headin’ Out, Movin’ In by Gunther Schuller were performed by ad hoc student ensembles in Britton Recital Hall on November 9, 2014. A corresponding lecture, ;;Converging Streams,” preceded this performance.The third recital was presented on January 19, 2015 in Britton Recital Hall. The program consisted of Rondino, WoO 25 by Ludwig van Beethoven, Oktet, op. 34 by Asger Lund Christiansen, Fratres by Arvo Pärt, and Le bal de Béatrice d’Este by Reynaldo Hahn. Ad hoc student ensembles performed all selections. A corresponding lecture, ;;Echoes of Harmonie,” preceded the performance.
