This analysis is concerned with the topic of performance appraisals in the public sector. Specifically, the use of performance appraisals by large units of local government (50,000-250,000) is compared with the use illustrated by small units of local government (1,000-10,000). Variables for purposes of comparison are developed from a comprehensive literature review. A primary survey instrument is also utilized. Results of the research indicate that there may not be as great a difference between the two classes of government (large and small) with respect to use of performance appraisal systems as is suggested by the traditional data available on this topic.
