Zambia is endowed with an abundance ofnatural resources that include, water, forests and wildlife. The country's wildlife resources are managed throughgovernment-supported National Parks and Game ManagementAreas (GMAs) and private sector game ranches. The mainobjective of this wildlife sector policy review is toconsolidate the findings collected from an extensivebibliography published during the life of the currentpolicy, and the analysis of key sector practitioners. Thesecond objective is to analyze these findings with a view toformulating broad recommendations to inform the design ofthe new vision and new policy of the sector. This documentaims to identify policy issues that would provide a basisfor the creation of an enabling environment for thedevelopment of the wildlife sector as a growth sectoraccording to the Sixth National Development Plan (SNDP) andthe vision 2030. It contains five provisional priorityrecommendations that offer practical solutions and sixstrategic options which constitute policy objectives. Inconclusion, an improvement of the policy framework couldhave a large impact on how people and wildlife relate andcoexist in Zambia. This policy review confirmed that, whileimportant policy measures are necessary, particularly forshared growth, the adoption of a forward looking wildlifepolicy and act will not be sufficient if it is notaccompanied by unequivocal willingness on the part ofGovernment to reorganize and strengthen Zambia WildlifeAuthority's (ZAWA's) capacity and providefinancing commensurate to its need.
