This package of policy papers aims toprovide the Government with new analytical findings,international experiences, as well as a number of optionswhich might be of interest in the deliberations of policyactions that could improve equalities of opportunity inChilean society. The package includes a Development PolicyReview which examines policy options that could help Chileto achieve the twin goals of fast and equitable growth. TheDevelopment Policy Review focuses on social protection,education, innovation, private sector development, and thefinancing of development policies. Further, the packageincludes five specific Policy Notes which provide additionalin-depth discussions on a number of selected topics, all ofthem important to improving equalities of opportunity in thecountry. These specific topics had been suggested to us by anumber of senior Chilean policy makers over the past monthsas being of potential interest for the incoming ChileanGovernment. This presentation of World Bank documents shows,in the second section, some dimensions of inequalities ofopportunity in Chile today. The third section summarizes themain messages of the Development Policy Review and thespecific Policy Notes in four broad areas of pro-equitypolicies: strengthening and protecting human capacities;ensuring access to infrastructure services and equitableregional development opportunities; strengthening markets,protecting people against macro-economic shocks andfostering innovation-led growth; and financing pro-equitydevelopment policies. Finally, the last section presents theresults of some quantifications as to what the results of anumber of pro-equity policies could be on growth, poverty,and income inequality.
