This study used the data gathered duringa previous World Bank project to assess the availableoptions for the cost-effective reconstruction andrehabilitation of livestock market and slaughter facilitiesin the developing world. Using the rich array of resourcematerial which the previous study gathered in five of theBank's lending regions, this report providesinformation on the characteristics of these facilities. Itassesses available technologies, processes and materials forreconstruction and makes recommendations on theappropriateness and cost-effectiveness of these measuresunder a variety of conditions. Despite the very seriousstate of disrepair and poor operating standards, there ismuch than can feasibly be done to improve outcomes in thenear term and bring about better welfare, safety, andhygiene conditions for all parties concerned.
