The Practice of Responsible Investment Principles in Larger-Scale Agricultural Investments : Implications for Corporate Performance and Impact on Local Communities
This report presents findings from afield-based survey on the conduct of agricultural operationsat 39 large-scale, mature agribusiness investments insub-Saharan Africa and Southeast Asia. The objective of thereport is to provide first-hand, practical knowledge of theapproach, behavior, and experience of these investments,their relationships with surrounding communities and theconsequent positive and/or negative outcomes for thesecommunities, host countries, other stakeholders, and theinvestors themselves. More than 550 community stakeholderswere interviewed about the impacts the investments had onthose they represented. These impressions and ideas of localcommunities enriched this study and provided unique insightsinto what factors are at play, and their impact on thosemost directly affected by outside investments. The lessonslearned and good practices identified are intended to informthe work of government bodies, investors, non-governmentalorganizations, development agencies, and other institutionsthat promote responsible investment in agriculture.
