Over the past year, the response to theglobal financial crisis has continued to dominatedevelopment and the work of international institutions,including the World Bank Group. Challenges of poverty andfragile states, environment, and climate change remaindaunting. But the manner in which these are best addressedis shifting. The World Bank Group, a crucial partner in thesolutions to global development, must adapt to these changesfor greater development effectiveness. The InternationalBank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD), theInternational Development Association (IDA), theInternational Finance Corporation (IFC), and theMultilateral Investment Guarantee Agency (MIGA) individuallyface particular challenges in the increasingly multipolarworld. But there are opportunities for coordination acrossthe World Bank Group, whether between public and businessactivities, among sectors, or across macro and microconcerns. Emphasizing these synergies, part one of thisjoint report discuss recent activities and results of theWorld Bank Group; part two focuses on select issues indevelopment effectiveness at each institution. A separatevolume of this report contains a detailed review and ratingof management response and actions regarding recommendationsfrom the Independent Evaluation Group (IEG) from recent years.
