【 摘 要 】
Despite a fair amount of progress onunderstanding human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)epidemiology globally, the Middle East and North Africa(MENA) region is the only region where knowledge of theepidemic continues to be very limited, and subject to muchcontroversy. It has been more than 25 years since thediscovery of HIV, but no scientific study has provided acomprehensive data-driven synthesis of HIV/AIDS (acquiredimmunodeficiency syndrome) infectious spread in this region. The current report provides the first comprehensivescientific assessment and data-driven epidemiologicalsynthesis of HIV spread in MENA since the beginning of theepidemic. It is based on a literature review and analysis ofthousands of widely unrecognized publications, reports, anddata sources extracted from scientific literature orcollected from sources at the local, national, and regionallevels. The recommendations provided here focus on keystrategies related to the scope of this report and itsemphasis on understanding HIV epidemiology in MENA as awhole. The recommendations are based on identifying thestatus of the HIV epidemic in MENA, through this synthesis,as a low HIV prevalence setting with rising concentratedepidemics among priority populations. General directions forprevention interventions as warranted by the outcome of thissynthesis are also discussed briefly, but are not delineatedbecause they are beyond the scope of this report. Thisreport was not intended to provide interventionrecommendations for each MENA country.
