Morocco s economy is growing rapidly inall its sectors (tourism, agriculture, industry , etc.)Consequently, the energy demand has been increasing steadilyin the period 2003-2007 when primary energy demand rose by5% per annum and electricity demand by 8% per annum. At therequest of the World Bank Group, this study was launchedhaving 3 main objectives: An analysis of the currentcharacteristics of energy supply and demand, the assessmentof the energy strategy of Morocco for the coming years, andthen a development of an alternative energy scenario withlow carbon energies. Beicip-Franlab has established adetailed energy balance of Morocco on the basis ofMoroccanand international studies already conducted on the energysector of Morocco as well as on well known databases likeIEA ones. For the period 2009-2030, Morocco hasdefined an energy strategy which was presented during thefirst Assises de l Energie organized in March 2009. Anassessment of this strategy considering both energy andenvironmental criteria will be presented in order to becompared with the business as usualscenario. Finally an alternative scenario isproposed. Based on an intensive introductionofrenewable energy (RE) and energy efficiency(EE), this scenario would permit a great exploitation of theavailable RE potential in Morocco, and particularly its windpower potential. In November 2009 after the present reportis finalized, Moroccan authorities presented a solar powerplan which increases its renewable energy target in 2020,making solar energy target comparable to its wind energytarget.A quick review of this new solar plan ispresented at the end of this report.
