Transforming agriculture in Africa isnot simply about helping Africa; it is essential forensuring global food security. But Africa s agriculture isalso of critical importance when it comes to meeting theworld s future needs for food and fiber. With the globalpopulation expected to exceed 9 billion by 2050, foodsecurity producing enough food of sufficient quality andmaking it accessible and affordable for consumers around theworld is one of the most important policy objectives .TheUnited Nations estimates that global food demand will doubleby 2050, with much of that growth driven by developingcountries. The world will then need to feed 2.3 billion morepeople, and given the deep transformation of growthtrajectories in low-income countries, these populations willbe increasingly affluent and will demand more, different, and better food. But how will the world meet this additionaldemand? Given Africa s productive potential, it must be akey contributor to feeding the world in the future. But tofully realize that potential will require overcoming manyobstacles through innovative and transformative approaches.
