The Multi Donor Fund for Aceh and Nias(MDF) and the Java Reconstruction Fund (JRF) have playedsignificant roles in the remarkable recovery of Aceh, Niasand Java, following some of the worst disasters in Indonesiain recent years. The MDF and the JRF, which is patternedafter it, are each considered a highly successful model forpost-disaster reconstruction. This paper presents lessonsfrom the MDF and JRF's efforts to facilitatewomen's empowerment and gender equality during thereconstruction process. The reconstruction process presentedopportunity to address gender issues and other socialinequalities. Enhancing the role of women under the MDF andJRF programs saw significant results, such as improved andsustained outcomes in housing and infrastructure, fastereconomic and livelihood recovery and increased productivity,strengthening of women's legal rights, morerepresentative decision making and enhanced resilience forwomen and communities.
