The book presents estimates of totalwealth for nearly 120 countries, using economic theory todecompose the wealth of a nation into its component pieces:produced capital, natural resources and human resources. Thewealth estimates aims to provide a unique opportunity tolook at economic management from a broader and comprehensiveperspective. The book's basic tenet is that economicdevelopment can be conceived as a process of portfoliomanagement, so that sustainability becomes an integral partof economic policy making. The rigorous analysis, presentedin accessible format, tackles issues such as growth,development and equity. This publication is organized infour sections. The first part introduces the wealthestimates and highlights the main facts on the level andcomposition of wealth across countries. The second partanalyzes changes in wealth and how they matter for economicpolicy. The third part deals with the level of wealth, itscomposition and links to growth and inequality. The fourthpart reviews existing applications of resource andenvironmental accounting.
