Sanitation marketing is an emergingfield with a relatively small group of practitioners who arelearning by doing. With an introductory guide to sanitationmarketing, the Water and Sanitation Program (WSP) seeks tocontribute to the field by sharing practical guidance on thedesign, implementation, and monitoring of rural sanitationmarketing programs at scale in India, Indonesia, andTanzania, plus additional projects implemented in Cambodiaand Peru. Author's goal for this guide and toolkit isto: define sanitation marketing and the key components ofsanitation marketing; initiative; provide an overallframework for scaling up rural sanitation programs and thejustification for using a sanitation marketing approach;explain the steps needed to design, implement, and monitorsanitation marketing programs at scale; and highlight keychallenges and recommend solutions. The print guideemphasizes at scale throughout. Although the concept ofscale will be applied differently in each country, the focusshould be on thinking big enough from the beginning to planinterventions that can be replicated effectively andefficiently across an entire country.
