【 摘 要 】
The Singapore economy has undergonesignificant stages of development since the 1960s. It hasgrown from its traditional role as a regional port anddistribution center in the 1960s to an internationalmanufacturing and service center in the 1970s and 1980s, andnow into a center of science-based manufacturing andknowledge-intensive technical services. Much has beenwritten to explain this success. Emphasis has been placed onthe early adoption of an export-oriented strategy forindustrialization, high savings and investment rates, astable macroeconomic environment, and even socio culturaltraits that support successful industrialization. Thisvolume documents a less-explored aspect of Singapore'seconomic development: it examines the transformation of theeducation and training system since the country'sindependence in 1965 and how the process contributed toskills formation and, hence, economic change.
