【 摘 要 】

Returns to investment in education basedon human capital theory have been estimated since the late1950s. In the 40-plus year history of estimates of returnsto investment in education, there have been several reviewsof the empirical results in attempts to establish patterns.Many more estimates from a wide variety of countries,including over time evidence, and estimates based on neweconometric techniques, reaffirm the importance of humancapital theory. The suthors review and present the latestestimates and patterns as found in the literature at theturn of the century. However, because the availability ofrate of return estimates has grown exponentially, theauthors include a new section on the need for selectivity incomparing returns to investment in education andestablishing related patterns.
